:: Background

Growing up, Felicity never quite fit in with her peer group. While her classmates chattered and giggled over the latest Bratz dolls, she was pulling apart the toaster to see how it worked. In high school, when the dolls turned to boys and pom poms, Felicity was hanging out in the computer lab. She soaked up programming languages and network engineering like a Sham Wow tossed into a full sink. All the hopes she had over finally finding a place to belong were dashed, however. She was a girl in a male-dominated field and routinely overlooked or patronized. Felicity fought back by embracing that difference - she dyed her hair blonde, dressed to emphasize her femininity, and routinely out-performed every last one of the computer geeks in her school.

Her tenacity and drive to prove herself garnered her a full ride scholarship in ITS. She still fought the same prejudices she did in high school but to a somewhat lesser degree. Eventually, her abilities over shone bright enough to win appreciation, if not outright acceptance. On track to finish her degree in three years, she opted to supplement her tech classes with sciences, focusing on ones dealing with chemistry and engineering. Unsurprisingly, she excelled there, too. Through it all, Felicity never really minded as long as she got what she wanted - she stayed true to herself and she got to work in a field she loved, speaking a language she understood as well as, if not better than, English.

Felicity interned at Queen Consolidated during her last summer before graduation. She spent that summer redesigning their intranet to function more effectively and so impressed the IT department head that he offered her a job upon graduation. She snapped it up and started work while the ink was still wet on her diploma. A few years later, she assumed the role as department head.

It was this role that brought her face to face with the mysterious crown prince of Queen Consolidated, Oliver Queen. The mystery surrounding him didn't end after meeting him, especially when he brought her things like a bullet-ridden laptop and a loaded syringe. She never failed to do what he asked, but she filed these things away, shunted them into a subroutine. To that end when found him hiding in the back of her car, bleeding from a gunshot wound, it didn't take her long to put together that he was the vigilante. Her sense of right and wrong kept her from fully signing on to help him in his quest, but as she worked with Oliver, she started to realize the importance of what he was doing, and that he, and Diggle, needed not only her computer and analytical skills, but also a watchdog to keep both revenge-minded guys in check.

:: Personality

Felicity is a lot like a duck on a pond. You may see her sitting at her desk in full composure as she hacks her way around the internet and drifts into and out of secure systems like layers of encryption are nothing more than gossamer. She looks composed and possibly even bored with the lack of challenge these systems offer her. Underneath that calm exterior, though, her little duck legs are paddling like mad. She's filing away everything she hears and keeping it for reference. Any tendency you have to underestimate her, or question her skills, will probably result in you waking up with your credit rating slashed and a lurid profile posted to whipsandchainsmatch.com

Felicity's sense of right and wrong is oddly rigid for someone who spends as much time hacking into secure systems as she does. She's rigid, but not entirely inflexible. Initially against what her boss does in his off hours, she doesn't hesitate to go to him for help when a friend goes missing. She's not afraid to draw lines and set boundaries, but at the same time, she will blur or wipe them away if she sees the need. Her initial reluctance to be a part of Oliver's vigilante actions is slowly blurred as she sees more and more of the good he does until she's officially part of the team; a role she embraces wholly and with the same tenacity she does everything else.

One of the more endearing qualities Felicity has is a completely non-functioning filter, especially when it comes to her Oliver. She will speak her mind when she thinks he's going in the wrong direction, to sass him when she thinks he needs it, and to her utter mortification, let the highly inappropriate things she's thinking tumble out of her mouth before she can stop herself.

Felicity's also very courageous. She's willing to put herself on the line, whether it be as bait for a serial killer or taking an extremely sketchy plane to a remote island and then parachuting out of it. She does these things not because she's reckless or has an adrenaline addiction, but she simply does what she knows she needs to do for the greater good.

Felicity was trying to work on her digital map of the hotel. She just had a few more tweaks and the app would be ready for the smartphone network...but she couldn't stop staring at the little hunk of metal on her desk. The one she couldn't make work.

"God, I hate mysteries."

She picked it up and looked at it again. Nothing. Not a thrum of power, not a blip on her multimeter. Zip. Squat. Then, in one of those moments that was probably the start of a really bad idea, her eyes flicked from the tracker to the map. She tapped a few keys and called up the application and switched to design view. There it was, one of the doors that lead outside of the construct they lived in now. The arena.

Her feet were moving before her brain could remind her of a dozen impulsive ideas that never, ever turned out right. She only stopped long enough to grab her tablet, her multimeter, her phone, and a handful of different wires and components that she stuffed into her pocket as she walked.

Two hours later, though if you asked her she'd say she'd only been there ten minutes, she was recording the wave patterns of the information coming off the tracker and monitoring the power draw.

She was so focused, she didn't even see the monkeys gathering around her.
